The photograph was found, uncaptioned, in the US National Archives in College Park, Maryland. It was in an envelope labeled "Progress Photographs". Most US Navy ship construction contracts require the shipbuilder to take photographs of the vessels during particular stages of the vessel's construction. This photograph and the next one were both taken on 15 October 1940 at a very early stage of construction. Only a few frames and a bulkhead can be seen amongst the timbers of the scaffolds and other supports.
